SoulCycle at Home. Tom Hanks At-Home Monologue. A late-night talk show with a different interview format, where guests appear on stage simultaneously and the host sits to the left and not behind a desk, and with original segments like 'Carpool Karaoke'.
A mix of celebrity interviews, musical performers, audience participation games, and segments spotlighting real people with extraordinary stories and talents.
The comedy-variety-talk show is broadcast five nights a week from the Ed Sullivan theater in New York. Project sees Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele in front of a live studio audience bantering about a topic weaved between filmed shorts and sketches.
In addition to A late-night comedy show featuring several short skits, parodies of television commercials, a live guest band, and a pop-cultural guest host each week.
What was unique about "NBC's Saturday Night", in , was that it brought back the ninety minute variety format-except for that now it was late night TV.
Since , there hadn't been another comedy-variety show of such length. Also, since the early days of live comedy and theater drama, there hadn't been a live television staple, pretty much since the early sixties.
That all changed in October The writing was a bit biting: besides the standard continuing comedy sketches, there was political satire, too-often seen on the 'Weekend Update' news sketch, which was handled by regular Chevy Chase, and was reminiscent to earlier shows like "That Was the Week That Was" and "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour".
There was a musical guest, sometimes a talent act, and a short film comic filmmaker Albert Brooks started out here, and later, the 'Mr.
Bill' shorts were a standard. To give an idea of the multitude of variety format, on the second broadcast, the guest host was singer Paul Simon, Albert Brooks offered one of his film shorts, the musical guests for the evening were Randy Newman and Phoebe Snow-with a special surprise by Simon and Art Garfunkel, and a sketch with Jim Henson's Muppets Henson was trying to break out from under the weight of the kiddie programs "Sesame Street" and several 'family' specials.
In that day, the regulars were tagged 'The Not-Ready-for-Primetime Players', and included Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, and Chase who were all, eventually, part of the writing staff, as well.
The show was definitely unique, a breath of fresh air in the midst of a pop-culture takeover similar in what was happening to cinema, as well, the time.
Over the years, the show has gotten thru some tough times, but has never really seemed as challenging as in those early days. True, the writing was never perfect, and could be quite silly, in fact, even in those earliest days.
However, much of it was satire handled like nothing else on TV at that time. It was often quite innovative and challenging.
There have been times, actually, where the writing has gone beyond the late night standard as in the late 80s-Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Jon Lovitz era-and, recently, with Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Parnell, Daryl Hammond, and Horatio Sanz , but, overall, it was more focused on the likes of adult diaper sketches and, like most TV-lots of sex.
Now, the show has really never been short of good comics, but when it comes to the actual comedy, it's often been sub par. It's good to see that there actually are some brains behind the show, again, though.
Except after so many years, does it really matter anymore? I mean, is it really the same cutting edge broadcast it was so many years ago, now with a vast budget and few surprises?
The writing may be better, again, but where's the creativity gone? Ironically, with all the evidence available, maybe 'The Not-Ready-for-Primetime Players' were more ready than ever.

Lopez and the cast were not told they were airing on a delay. Michaels was so upset by the delay that the episode was rerun a mere three weeks later.
The fledgling football league ended up changing their rules in order to speed up play, and a deal was reached where the feed to future games would be cut off - whether the game had been decided or not - when SNL started, so that no such incident would happen again.

SNL has also had an effect on American elections—most commonly presidential elections. Voters have reported that political sketches shown on the program influenced them in the voting booth.
Two-thirds of voters who responded to a poll said they had seen a broadcast of politically charged content on SNL , with ten percent saying it had made a difference in their decision.
Barack Obama was the beneficiary of the political content, with 59 percent saying they did in fact cast a vote for the Democratic then-nominee.
Chevy Chase's bumbling impression of then-president Gerald Ford during the presidential election was cited as an influence on the election, and a quote commonly attributed to vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin stating "I can see Russia from my house" was actually spoken by SNL cast member Tina Fey while portraying Palin.
Due to the show's live factor , a number of technical problems, performer mishaps, intentional acts of sabotage by performers, protests, and cuts to dead air have occurred throughout the show's run.
On October 23, , Ashlee Simpson appeared as a musical guest, and there was a lip synching mishap.
Her first performance, " Pieces of Me ," was performed without incident, but when she began her second song, " Autobiography ," the vocals for "Pieces of Me" were heard again through the speakers, even before she had raised the microphone to her mouth.
Simpson began to do an impromptu jig and then became the only musical act to leave the stage. At the goodnights at the close of the show, Simpson blamed her band for playing the wrong song.
Over the years, SNL has been criticized for its perceived lack of racial and sexuality minority representation. SNL has had "little representation from Asian actors, as cast members or hosts," in its run.
As of September , there have been cast members ; five, or roughly 3. Another 14 hosts came out at some point after they had been on the show.
Sweeney was also the first openly gay series regular on network television. All three cast members left after one season.
Kate McKinnon was already out before she was cast in Numerous news outlets noted the disconnect of Michaels hiring Yang, an out gay Chinese-American cast member, at the same time as Shane Gillis , who was found to have aired what was perceived as homophobic and anti-Asian jokes and slurs on his podcast.
Jake Weisman, co-star of Comedy Central 's Corporate , says the absence of gay men in the cast is rooted in homophobia and bigotry.
Saturday Night Live , the first authorized book about the series, was published by Avon Books in and edited by Anne Beatts and John Head, with photography by Edie Baskin; all three worked for SNL at the time the book was published.
The oversized illustrated paperback included the scripts for several sketches by the —80 cast.
The interviews reveal personal experiences from what happened backstage and the difficulty of getting the show on air each week.
SNL has made several efforts to develop some of the more popular sketches into feature-length films, with varying degrees of commercial and critical success.
The screenplay only got as far as a Revised First Draft dated July 26, , before being abandoned. The success of Wayne's World encouraged Michaels to produce more film spin-offs, based on several popular sketch characters.
Many of these films were produced by Paramount Pictures. The character Bob Roberts from the Tim Robbins film of the same name first appeared on SNL in a short film about the conservative folk singer.
In addition, the comedy film Office Space originated from a series of animated short films by Mike Judge that aired on SNL in The three members of the Folksmen were the same three comedians: Harry Shearer , Michael McKean , and Christopher Guest , who also appeared on the same episode as the rock group Spinal Tap.
At the time of the appearance the —85 season , Shearer and Guest were cast members. Bill's Real Life Adventures is based on the Mr.
Bill sketches from early seasons of SNL. The song became a surprise hit, and convinced Michaels to encourage the troupe to develop more comedy songs.
Several programs have documented the behind-the-scenes events of the show. A 60 Minutes report taped in October depicted the intense writing frenzy that goes on during the week leading up to a show, with crowded meetings and long hours.
The report particularly noted the involvement of the guest host s in developing and selecting the sketches in which they will appear.
In , Saturday Night , a minute documentary by actor James Franco in his directorial debut, was released; it follows the production process of the December 6, , episode hosted by John Malkovich , from the concept stage to the episode actually airing live.
Although it originated as a five-minute short film for Franco's New York University film class, Michaels granted Franco access to the process, allowing the project to be expanded.
The program included a mix of clips, new performances of classic characters from previous cast members, and special guest appearances from previous hosts.
